Question: Should I close the HVAC vents in rooms that I’m not using?

Answer: It’s best not to. Closing vents in rooms that are not being used puts added pressure on that particular branch of the duct system. And if that branch of the duct system has leaks, it may (over time) create an even bigger leak. If you really want to stop the air flow to an unused room, install a damper at the beginning of that branch of the duct system. When the damper is closed, conditioned air will not go down the duct system to that room, when it’s open it will. But if you don’t want to install a damper, it’s better to leave the vents open.
